Which of the two can change the background of my image?
GPT Image. Imagen 4 on this platform has no “image to image” mode and doesn't accept an image as input.
No such language.
GPT Image is a single model, yet it covers both generation and editing — and with the most input images at once among the image models here. Imagen 4 has three variants, but only for text-to-image generation: there is no editing mode. If your work ends with generating, Imagen 4 gives you more price tiers; if it goes on to reworking, GPT Image is the only one of the two that does it.
The price in credits is per run and appears on the “Generate” button before you press it.

GPT Image accepts an exceptionally large number of input images when editing. A composition of product, background, person and props goes through in a single run.
One model means one behavior. There are no surprises between variants, because there are no variants.
The description field for editing is very large — a complex task with many conditions fits in full.
Imagen 4 offers three tiers: fast, standard and highest. For exploring a composition, the fast one is used; for the final, the highest.
Imagen 4 states a cap on the description, meaning you know how far the model reads.
The set of aspect ratios covers social and advertising formats.
Where Imagen 4 loses. It has no editing mode at all. That's a whole missing workflow, not a setting. Once you want to rework the shot, you switch brands.
Where GPT Image loses. One model, one price: there's no cheap step for tests, and with a complex composition there are many tests. There's also no explicit choice of resolution; for that, see Nano Banana.
Going to edit — GPT Image. Only generating and want a cheap search mode — Imagen 4.

For a final shot — yes. For finding a composition, the fast variant gives the same information for a fraction of the price.
See the “Most images at once” row in the table for the “image to image” mode — the number is read live from the model's card.
